A rarely used but original part of the Winom-Frazier system, the Sheep Rock (Sheep Creek Trail (3049) on the map),
offers a glimpse of the old-school single track that existed early in this systems history. With its shadowy tread with challenging sidehill climbs, it is an exciting change from the majority dual use (Class I and III) trails of the system. On the current map, the trail is seen coming off of the Christensen Trail (3185) and seems to dead end on the 500 road. Un-marked on the map is a series of road/trails, the A, B, C trails (post on these soon) that connect it into the trails on the Wallowa-Whitman side of the system. Don’t be surprised to see trees still down across the trail, as this trail sees limited maintenance. But this limited use and maintenance adds to the “Hidden Gem” status of this trail, check it out!
